Jeep diesel upgrade?

It's the first time that I heard about this. I'm not a big fan of modifications but I though someone here might be interested by it.

I'm not even sure if I can post those ads here. Bill or John let me know and I will remove it.

Jeep Willys Kubota V2003/V2203/V2403 Diesel Conversion Kit $999.95

The Kit includes:
-CNC milled High Quality Aluminium(6061-T6) Adapter Plate

Metric Hardware to mount adapter to engine
* Bellhousings on early CJ's with starter bushing built in, will need to change to the later nose cone style starter bellhousing to fit Kubota flywheel.

Your post is OK, Pascal.  Neat stuff, not something I would do unless gas gets crazy and diesel is still cheep. But if I found a Kubota engine on my front porch I'd definitely be getting hold of these guys.

If someone couldn't find a decent L head that's a pretty neat idea.  Looks like a nice clean fit too.  I wonder if they require two batteries?

Doesn't look like a big performance gain except for the 4cyl turbo version.  engine specs...http://www.countrysalesandservice.com/pdfs/Super03.pdf

I always thought that might be a good conversion, especially if you could spec the motor with enough torque to allow a guy to change the diffs to 4.18 or even a 3.72.  Nice way to avoid over drives and keep your engine speed down.   Just thinking.

I think it is very cool. Before I rebuilt another V6 for the Jalopy, I was considering a diesel swap.

I have actually thought about doing this is I were to get a second jeep that was going to be a daily driver. Because I already have a Toyota 3 cylinder sitting in my shed right now.  Cool

A quick look at a conversion chart I found online reveals that the "ps" figures shown on the Kubota pdf are very close to hp figures, which means the turbo diesel (as shown in the pic) would have about 45-55 hp and over 100 lbs of torque.  Pretty nice.

So these engines for this modification have less HP than the Lhead? Do they get better milage than the Lhead? Sorry for all these questions, I'm trying to justify spending a grand on the kit and another couple grand on an engine. So far torque is the only thing I'm seeing.

Imho, I'm no expert by no means, but the advantage to me would be mileage, and the coolness factor of having a diesel jeep, the kubotas I've delt with are very fuel efficient and very reliable. I would think a turbo charged model would be better than a L head at higher elevations. But, most kubotas, like most small diesels, run at 3,000 rpms max, and really dont have any power to about 2300 or so. that would mean 45 MPH with stock gearing and transmission, without a OD, and have other drivability issues. I'm sure there are fixes for these issues, but rebuilding a l head isn't that expensive. Again, just my uneducated, just judging by experience opinon.

I agree with gmcjr.  Fuel mileage, coolness.  There is no way a diesel conversion in a flatfender could ever be "cost-effective."

I'm guessing you would have to have a OD with a diesel, just to be a gear spiltter, so you wouldn't lose as much rpms between shifts. Just a thought.

I wonder what the weight difference would be?
